Poplar Boys Outscore Wolves, 74-56, In Conference Action
After Wolf Point held a halftime advantage, Poplar’s boys’ basketball team used deadly outside shooting in the second half to post a 74-56 victory on Saturday, Jan. 10.
Trailing 32-26, the visiting Indians opened the third quarter with the first nine points on a 12-footer by Ryder Olson, a three-pointer by Dane Moran, two free throws by Chasen Pribbernow and a steal and shot by Olson to grab a 35-32 lead.
The Wolves pulled even at 37-37 when Sean Hamilton fired in a three-pointer with under five minutes left in the period, but Poplar gained control with the next 12 points on a pair of three-pointers and a layup by Moran along with a three-pointer by Chasen Pribbernow.
Poplar held on for a 51-39 lead at the end of the quarter.
The Wolves started off strong in the fourth quarter on a steal and drive by Roper Flaten along with a turnaround shot by Da’Shaun Jackson. Poplar, however, responded with an inside basket by Xhaiden Bull Chief and three-point shots by Olson and Chasen Pribbernow for a 59-41 margin.
Late in the period, Wolf Point closed the margin to 65-53 on a three-pointer by Andrew Williamson. Poplar scored the next seven points on a hoop by Chance Pribbernow, a basket by Wilder Bearcub and a three-pointer by Moran.
Poplar’s top scorers were Olson with 23, Moran with 18 and Chasen Pribbernow with 15.
Adding five points each were Bull Chief, Bostyn Azure and Chance Pribbernow. Bearcub had three points.
Leading the Wolves were Zandon Calder with 15, Jett Azure with 10 and Roper Flaten with nine. Also scoring were Richard Campbell with six, Williamson with five, Hamilton with five, Jackson with four and Jesse Foote with two.
Poplar held a 15-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and increased the gap to 18-13 on a three-pointer by Olson early in the second period.
Calder, a 6-5 junior, then became a huge factor with six points, including a dunk, to bring Wolf Point back to 21-19.
After the Indians grabbed a 26-19 lead, the Wolves ran off the final 13 points of the half on a three-pointer by Campbell, a three-point play by Calder, a turnaround shot by Jackson, two free throws by Flaten and a three-point play by Campbell.
