The snows of winter are here, and began Monday morning, Nov 24. It snowed all day with 3-5 inches on the ground by night. The moisture is much appreciated for the fields to be covered. Because it began with rain, the highways, especially the 250 north are slippery and treacherous, especially today. The storm forecast for Thanksgiving afternoon, thankfully waited until morning, and it’s been snowing steady this Friday morning Temps have been mostly in the mid teens. The MB Youth and others in the community traveled to a camp called Inspiration Hills in the state of Iowa, near Sioux Falls, S.D., for the Central District Youth Conference, accompanied by their youth sponsors, Brent and Lynn Unrau. They prepared and served a soup dinner to their congregation as a fundraiser on Nov. 16. Unrau said, “It was Nov 2023 in Inwood, Iowa. We took 20 kids. There were around 100 youth total there from the central district of the MB church. There were teaching sessions, small group time, and a worship band from Tabor College. One day, we did a service project at The Banquet in downtown Sioux Falls. It was a fun trip and hopefully a meaningful time for the youth.” You can find pictures on the Lustre MB website.
Friends and family of David Wedel gathered at the Bethel Wolf Point Cemetery for his burial Nov. 24.
Placing first at the end of their season in standings, the Lustre junior high boys maintained their undefeated season, defeating Frazer in the first game, and then Frontier in the championship held at Wolf Point. Drew Reddig, Liam Reneke, Gunner Damboise, Coleman Hilkemann, Justin Schiller, Joe Olfert, Sam Byers and Jake Neufeld were all in the scoring column. Good defense by Joe Olfert and Justin Schiller, Coleman Hilkemann’s and Gunner Damboise’s steals helped to bring the win with the teamwork. The Frontier School did an excellent job of hosting the tournament.
On Friday, Nov 21, Coach Lisa Neufeld’s junior high girls played Frontier in their first game at 4 p.m. at Frazer, and won 38-19 to earn their berth in the 2025 junior high girls tournament championship game. They played against the undefeated Frazer team and kept ahead of them, ending the half at 20-16. There was 1 minute 5 seconds left in the third when the score was Lustre 24, Frazer 20, then at 1:07 left in the game, it was 32-29 Frazer ahead. The fact the girls really showed up kept Lustre in the game in a way they haven’t played before. And the defense made a huge difference with the height advantage that Frazer had alongside their excellence. As in the standings at the end of the season, Lustre placed second in the tournament, losing a heart-breaker 29-37. Wow, it was a good championship game!
