Wolf Point resident Frances Weeks heard about people struggling to feed their families and probably having their food stamp distribution decreased. In order to help, she decided to lend a hand and her cooking talents.

Beginning the first weekend of November, Weeks started providing meals for those who are in need. She offered items such as soup, frybread and rolls.

“Our community needs help,” Weeks explained of her decision. “I rather be helping somebody, it makes it better to me.”

She provides the food during weekends because the senior program doesn’t serve during those days. Weeks feeds from 1-3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays from her home at 326 Helena St. People are asked to bring bowls or containers to carry the food.

During that first weekend, she served 15 families including one family of 11 members.

“It’s a community service that we all should have a heart and part of,” she explained.

If there are any leftovers, she freezes the soup or gives to neighbors during the weekend. “Nothing goes to week,” she added.

Weeks feels fortunate because she has friends who give deer meat to her often.

Growing up with a single mother and single grandmother, Weeks said she didn’t have a lot growing up. Her family stressed being frugal and living by the golden rule.

“If we didn’t have so many friends, we wouldn’t have love. That’s the secret ingredient,” Weeks said.

She describes Wolf Point as truly good community to live in. “People need to get together and help and it will get better,” Weeks said.
