U.S. Navy Captain Retired Neil Zerbe spoke at the annual Fall Appreciation Dinner for the LCHS Foundation on Monday, Oct. 20. He is an alumnus of the class of 1972 in LCHS.

After graduating from college in Havre and Georgia Institute of Technology as an electrical engineer, he enlisted in the Navy to become a fighter pilot. He graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School and the Defense Acquisition Management School. Zerbe’s career in the Navy spanned four decades. As an electrical engineer, he worked on aircraft carriers. He was a carrier strike aviator and veteran of global deployments, planning and directing combat operations worldwide.

“Neil was the carrier battle force [four aircraft carrier strike groups] precision strike planner and C6ISR coordinator during Operation Desert Storm. He was the U.S. Central Command Air Operations Chief and cruise missile program manager.” “Neil has logged over 250 hours in the AWACS as the Airborne Command Element.” “He led the United States Third Fleet maritime experimentation for US Pacific Command/ Fleet Experimentation.”

They had focus areas including humanitarian assistance/ disaster relief. In retirement, he led the San Diego Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Advisory Council and is also a member of MILMEC, Naval Helicopter Association, Surface Navy Association, American Society of Naval Engineers, MIT Enterprise Forum, USS Midway Museum and the San Diego Bowl Game Association, among others. He is a disabled combat veteran, residing with his wife in San Diego, Calif..

He spoke on investing according to our gifting, and to encourage us to use our talents and gifts given for Christian education. He emphasized that parents need to encourage students “to explore options, different routes, whether it be technology school, military service or college.”

The dinner, attended by 60 people, was catered by Lisa Neufeld and her basketball team as a fundraiser. It was also used as an occasion for the 100 Club kickoff.

The final home game for the Lustre Christian High School volleyball team was Friday evening and it was senior night. The evening began with jamboree basketball and the LGS junior high girls’ basketball played against Nashua. Hannah Brown, daughter of Sarah Brown and the late Darin Brown, was honored as the only LCHS graduate on the volleyball team.

Lustre won the first game 25-17, lost to Nashua the second 20-25, won the third game 25-21 and the fourth game 25-14. The teams were well matched and the crowd enjoyed a number of huge recoveries from out of bounds, and exciting volleys.

Starters for LCHS were Ava Holtzricher, Lauren Holtzricher, Holly Hilkemann, Sidney Klatt, Aleah Fast, Monica Uy and Hannah Brown.

The district volleyball tournament is Oct. 30 through Nov. 1 in Saco. Divisional is Nov 6-8 in Sidney and the state tournament is Nov. 12-13 in Bozeman.
