Event Bring Parents, Schools Together
Poplar School
Solid relationship building involving school staff, parents and children took place as the Poplar School District held its community feed on Wednesday, Oct. 22.
Poplar Superintendent of Schools Keith Erickson explained the school district attempts to reach out to parents with a large event on a monthly basis.
“At the school, we always try to do a community event every month,” Erickson said. “The goal is to try to bridge the relationship between the school and community as much as we can.”
The community meal included hot dogs and chips being served at four different locations. The spots included the school’s football field, the boulevard, the Head Start basketball court on the east end and the basketball court at the airport addition.
“It was a great night with nice weather,” Erickson said. “It was a great turnout.”
Along with the meal at the football field, a color race took place involving elementary cross country runners. The run covered a little more than a half mile and featured high school cross country athletes tossing colored powder at the participants.
“It turned our really good,” Erickson said.
John Wetsit, elementary principal and high school cross country coach, organized the color race, which was greatly enjoyed by the young runners. The event featured runners from pre-k on up as well as adults.
“It’s family engagement that collaborates the school with the community,” Wetsit said.
The next school event for the community is scheduled to be turkey bingo in November.
“We usually order 250 turkeys and hams and go through them all,” Erickson said.
