Jahns Fares Well In Speech, Drama
Senior Profile
Culbertson High School senior Peyton Jahns has made a positive name for himself with the school’s speech and drama program during the last four years.
He explains that he joined speech and drama for the opportunity to meet new people from throughout the state.
Jahns competed in mime as a freshman and a sophomore.
“It looked easy and I wanted to see if I liked speech and drama,” Jahns said.
His efforts in mime led to a berth at the state competition.
Last year, Jahns excelled in program oral interpretation. He explained the category includes reading both a short story and a poem.
His selections were “Ashes” as a short story and “Upon The Burning of our House,” as a poem.
“It shows how fire can have many grievances,” Jahns said of the works.
His performances earned him eighth place at the state competition as a junior.
As a senior, he will again be a participant in program oral interpretation. His poem will be “Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep.” As far as the short story, Jahns said he is looking for something death related.
The Culbertson team, which includes about 15 students, will open its season in Sidney on Saturday, Nov. 1.
Jahns said his goal is to place in the top three at the state meet.
Outside of school, his main hobby is creating things with a 3-D printer.
History is his favorite class at school. “History can tell me things that I never lived through,” Jahns said. He likes to imagine how he would act in situations throughout the years.
His favorite teacher is Dave Solem because he makes subjects easy to understand.
Jahns has been attending school in Culbertson since the first grade. He appreciates his friends at Culbertson.
After high school, he plans to study psychology so he can work with children who are in need of help.
