The sounds of coyotes in the valleys at night, the combines running by day, children at play on the school grounds and a fire drill at high school tell us fall has come. It’s finally cooling off at night.

School began Wednesday, Aug. 20, for the 48 students at Lustre Grade School. Mrs. Mullet has 16 students in seventh and eighth, Ms. Earley has 11 in fifth and sixth, Mr. Malihan has 10 in third and fourth and Mrs. Nell has 11 in K-second grades.

The aides are Debbie Lenihan, Ashleigh Byers, Kimberly Klatt and Linette Utchman. Bus drivers are Ashleigh Byers, Kimberly Klatt, Don Traeholt and Wes Young. Debbie Lenihan and LaVonne Toews are playground supervisors. Jeanne Matthyser is the administrator.

The LCHS also began Aug. 20, with 30 students. Among the new teachers is Bob Ivestor who is teaching social studies. He comes from Taccoa, Ga. He and his wife, Connie, have a farm in Taccoa with ducks, chickens and goats. They have four grown children and six grandchildren. Before coming to Lustre, he taught two years in Plevna. He heard about the opening for a history teacher from former administrator Bob Burkhart and is glad to teach at a Christian high school. He has been a football coach.

Pastor Wayne Hathaway is teaching Bible survey in the two Bible classes (grades 9-10, 11-12). His prospectus includes teaching methods of memorizing Scripture and a major assignment for students to memorize Matthew chapter 5. They will also be reading biographies of noteworthy Christian people and doing book reports each quarter.

Returning teachers are Mrs. Hilkemann, Mr. Lu and Mrs. Reddig. Wes Young came out of retirement to be administrator.

The first event for the school was the opening welcome on Sunday, Aug. 24. R & R day is Aug. 26 and the Culbertson invitational on Aug. 30, Saturday at Culbertson for those in volleyball. The first home game is against Froid Lake at 4:30 p.m.
