You’d think we were in the tropics with the early morning rains most every day. We are thankful for the green pastureland and the help it will give the wheat harvest and the gardens. It will slow down the pea harvest though. 2/10” rain fell Thursday morning, and a total of 8/10” for the day was the typical.

Thunder rolled all day — especially long with lightening about 7 p.m. But we were spared the brunt of the storm which came south of Circle to Sidney and Glendive, where Sidney had a totally red sky Thursday night.

Monday, Academy Road was a refresher course on driving through the mud. But the community came together to clean LCHS and prepare the grounds for the school year. From trimming trees, and removing branches, filling in propane to campus homes, and fellows mowing the grass, to washing desks and windows, cleaning bulletin boards of staples and vacuuming rooms, the place was a beehive. How neat to see three generations of people working together, sweeping up pine cones and needles to be carried away by waiting wheelbarrows.

Intent on their task, a mother and her daughters were cleaning a major bulletin board to welcome the students with inspirational words of wisdom. Students cleaned light fixtures and chairs, alumni brought lunch and board members with their wives led the workers in checking off the needed changes room by room.

The dorm committee that is the year-round support system for our dorm parents focused on cleaning the dorm facilities for our students who come from other states or countries, and prepare the rooms according to need. What a delight to see staff members and their families after their summer breaks, and know how much they appreciated both their vacations and their jobs, and to know this is a community that is willing to work hard together for their youth to have a school in Lustre. Yes, there are challenges in being in the middle of nowhere, but there are also blessings.
