FFA Feed Helps Provide Opportunities For Students

The Roosevelt County Fair showcases many great area students who are interested in agriculture. One project to thank some of the students is the annual FFA alumni scholarship barbecue.
Volunteers estimate that the steak and potato meal started in 2010 in order to provide scholarships for Culbertson’s FFA students.
Last year, the Culbertson Alumni FFA organization gave out more than $4,000 in scholarships to graduating FFA members and alumni. More than $47,000 has been raised for scholarships since 2010.
Although the steak meal at the fair is probably the group’s largest fundraiser, volunteers Pam Arneson and Amy Berwick noted that serving two steak meals during high school basketball games also helps with the fund.
They plan to serve 175 individuals at the county fair. The meal, for a cost of $15, includes a steak, potato, salad and bar.
“We appreciate the community’s support,” Berwick said.
The food items are purchased locally. Head cooks this year were Kenneth Arneson and David Andersen.
Among the individuals at the fair was the school’s new agriculture teacher Khrista Corpron, who is originally from Arizona but has been teaching in Kalispell. She was introduced to several of Culbertson High School’s FFA members during the day.
“It’s amazing for our students,” Culbertson Superintendent of Schools Nicole Simonsen said of the fundraiser.
She added that the involvement of the FFA alumni group is impressive in a Class C sized community. “It’s so great and unique to have so super support.”
