Oelkers Reflects On National County Convention Experience

Roosevelt County Commissioner Gordon Oelkers recently returned from his first National Association of Counties (NACo) Convention, held this year in Philadelphia. As a first-time attendee, Commissioner Oelkers said the experience was both informative and energizing— offering valuable insights into how counties across the nation are tackling shared challenges and shaping policy together.

“The convention really helped me understand the full scope of NACo’s work and how counties like ours can have a voice at the national level,” Oelkers said. “It was an honor to represent Roosevelt County and rural Montana on that stage.”

The event began with a breakfast for first-time attendees, followed by the opening general session. Oelkers noted that being part of the annual business meeting was a highlight, providing a behind-the-scenes look at NACo’s policy-making process. He also signed up for NACo’s new Rural Energy Academy, a program aimed at helping rural counties explore renewable and sustainable energy options.

One of the more memorable moments came when fellow Montana Commissioner Mike McGinley helped him gain access to the new NACo President’s Reception. There, Oelkers had a one-on-one conversation with incoming NACo President D.J. Clark. “Having a direct conversation with the new president was invaluable,” he said. “It gave me a real sense of how committed NACo leadership is to working with counties of all sizes, especially those in rural areas.”

Oelkers also participated in a leadership institute meeting and reception, and joined a NACo-sponsored tour of Philadelphia’s historic mural art, which showcased the city’s deep community spirit and creativity.

“As I prepare to serve as incoming president of the Montana Association of Counties, this experience at the national level will help me bring new ideas and stronger partnerships back home to Roosevelt County,” Oelkers said.
