So far, $19,435 has been raised by 102 folks donating to the “Help Merle & Connie Rebuild After Fire” GoFundMe. The fund was set up by their children, Marshall Mullet, Winston Mullet and Merilee Murphy. Merle and Connie Mullet were LCHS dorm parents for several years around 2003-2008 and had returned to farming at Bloomfield.

About 1 a.m. May 5, the couple woke up to the sound of their smoke alarm. A fan was in the window and they didn’t smell anything but, when they opened their bedroom door, they were met with suffocating amounts of smoke. They fought their way downstairs, blinded by the smoke and battling the heat. They were able to get out of the house with nothing but the clothes on their back. They made it to a neighbors’ home to call 911.

The house is completely gone, leveled to the foundation. The house was built by Merle’s grandparents who homesteaded in the early 1900s. It was filled with irreplaceable heirlooms and memories.

The GoFundMe will be used to help buy necessities and help them recover. Max and Merilee Murphy came from Portland, Ore., to help the family clean and said their folks are living in an RV until they can rebuild.
