Daniels County Library Notes

The Royal Artisan by Tessa Afshar is a new addition to our large print collection. This book is the second in the Queen Esther’s Court series. This Christian historical fiction begins with Sazana, a very talented Jewish artisan. Her pottery is very well known. What isn’t known is her very secret identity that requires her to have people watching over her. Since her parents passed away, a friend of the family has taken on that responsibility.

She works for Haman, and when he finds out her secret, she literally becomes his slave! But all is not lost, an old “friend,” Jadon is back in the picture. Once he was her very favorite, but things went wrong and they parted. He is back now, in charge of security for Queen Esther. Just how this all plays out, well, our readers will just love this story!

Miss Wolcott’s Ghost by Louise Penny is number 21 in the Chief Inspector Armond Gamache series. This story begins with Inspector Gamache and a middle of the night phone call. All the caller has to say is “there’s a body in Lost Nation”. With no time to question the caller, because they disconnected the call, his first problem is “Where is Lost Nation?”

Of course, the inspector does locate Lost Nation, and with it, a grave with a dead body lying on top. And the strange part is that there are plants growing from the body! During the investigation, it is revealed that the plant was thought to have been extinct. Oh, and did I mention that the body was wearing clothing from the previous century, like over 100 years ago?

The reader will also find that one of the characters is based on an actual botanist from the Victorian area, and this all ties in with a lost ship. A true Penny novel that you are sure to enjoy!

Book Club will be reading The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and The Fire that Save America by Timothy Egan. This is a non-fiction history involving the environment and nature. On Aug. 20, 1910, strong winds hit the Montana, Idaho and Washington areas. The drought had left the national forests ripe for the picking, so to speak, and these winds whipped up hundreds of small fires. These turned into a roaring inferno in no time.

And from this horrible catastrophe, we have our Nation Park System. But what that all entails, is the highlight of this book! We find the pioneering notion of conservation, the robber barons fighting to hold control of these lands, and the men that tried to save them. A total of 3.2 million acres up in smoke, 85 killed, and still the largest recorded fire ever!

We are also reading Legacy Lanes by Robin Troy. Small town Montana, where the senior bowlers meet three times a week. Until one becomes a hero after saving a team mate from a choking incident involving a rogue chicken bone. This is all it takes to make him famous, so to speak. But with the early stages of dementia, it becomes a team effort to help each other through these tough stages of life!

We will meet Nov. 17, at 6:30 p.m. and Nov. 19, at 10 a.m. Stop by the library to pick up a copy of the books and join us for treats and discussion! Read one or read both, we enjoy one another’s company either way.

Cooking Club will meet at the library on Oct. 29, at 4 p.m. for the kids that have signed up. We are making take and bake pizza.
