State’s Unemployment Rate Remains At 3.2 Percent

Gov. Greg Gianforte announced last week that Montana’s unemployment rate remained at 3.2 percent in August. Montana’s unemployment rate was lower than the national unemployment rate, which remained at 4.1 percent. Montana ranks in the top 15 states with the lowest unemployment rates in the nation.

“Montana continues to rank in the top states with the lowest unemployment rates as businesses create more good-paying jobs and the Montana Department of Labor and Industry helps match workers with meaningful careers,” Gianforte said. “As we continue prioritizing workforce development programs, we’re working across the public and private sector to promote career, college, military, and entrepreneurship pathways for Montanans.”

Total employment (which includes payroll, agricultural, and self-employed workers) increased by 482 jobs in August, while the labor force increased by 177. “Montana’s unemployment rate continues to hold at a low level, reflecting stability in our labor market,” said Sarah Swanson, commissioner of Labor and Industry. “This report shows that Montana employers are continuing to create opportunities, and our workforce programs remain focused on helping workers gain the skills needed in key industries.”

Roosevelt County ranks 51st in the state with an unemployment rate of 4.5 percent. Counties below Roosevelt include Sanders at 4.7, Madison at 4.8, Glacier at 5, Lincoln at 5.1 and Big Horn at 6.3.

Daniels County is tied for 14th at 2.3 percent. Richland County is 18th at 2.4 percent and Valley County is 20th at 2.5 percent.

Counties with the lowest unemployment are Carter at 1.4, Treasure at 1.6, Powder River at 1.7, Garfield at 1.8 and Sweet Grass at 2 percent. Sheridan is tied for sixth with Fallon and Park at 2.1 percent.
