From the athletic field to the classroom, Mauricio Mena has made the most of his time at Culbertson High School while building toward a future in welding.

On the football field, Mena plays as a wide receiver and quarterback. He helped the Cowboys reach the playoffs during both his sophomore and junior seasons. In basketball, he plays point guard, while his track events include the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 4x100 relay, 4x400 relay and long jump.

Mena said he is especially looking forward to Culbertson’s homecoming football game against Circle.

“I’m expecting to beat Circle by a few points, and I am excited for the homecoming game as well,” he said.

History is Mena’s favorite class, and Shelby Manning is his favorite teacher.

Mena moved to Culbertson from Texas because of his father’s work. He said he appreciates the quiet atmosphere and close-knit feeling of the small town.

After graduation, Mena plans to attend college to study welding. He has been exploring schools in Texas as he prepares for the next chapter of his life.

Though his future may take him back to the Lone Star State, Mena will carry with him the experiences and connections he gained in the small community of Culbertson.
