Poplar’s flag football team is looking forward to a successful season and another trip to the state tournament this year. The Indians have qualified for the state tournament in each of the past two seasons.

“We’re trying to get to the championship game,” Poplar Coach Brock Copenhaver said. “We’ve been to state twice now. We want to bump up our expectations.”

Some of the top returning players for the Indians include senior Frankie Crawford, freshman Frankie Gourneau, sophomore Liberty Boadle, sophomore Carsyn Four Bear and junior Kali Colgan.

The Indians have a turnout of 23 players. Assistant coaches are Griffin Ricker and Jason Frederick.

“We should have enough to do a couple JV games so our younger players get some playing experience,” Copenhaver said.

A change this year is that Class B teams are part of the Class A-B division. Poplar’s conference opponents are Glendive, Harlem, Wolf Point and Glasgow. The top two teams will advance to the state tournament.

Copenhaver said close to 20 schools now have flag football. He feels the Montana High School Association will sanction the sport in the next two years.

“I think all the AA schools have flag football now,” the coach added.

A rule change is that the clock will now stop after scoring plays.
