Frazer Students Prepare For National History Competition
Four students will represent Frazer School at the National History Day competition held in Washington, D.C., during June.
Teacher Mary Zuchowski is pleased with the growth that the program has made in Frazer. Last year, Frazer had only five projects. At this year’s district competition, Frazer entered 11 projects with 21 students involved. “Nine went on to state,” Zuchowski said.
She explained that two projects qualified for nationals by placing in the top two at the state competition held in Bozeman on April 25.
Katherine Round Face, a sophomore, qualified in the senior division with a group exhibit about Hazel Hunkins, who was an American women’s right activist and suffragist.
The seventh-grade team of Mi’Yoni Fourstar-Wells and Londyn Rattling Thunder earned honors for their exhibit about the Fort Peck Dam. They competed in the junior division.
Elli Mail, a freshman, was selected as an alternate for the national conference for her exhibit regarding the Fort Shaw girls’ basketball team of 1904. Because other students in the state are unable to attend the national meet, Mail has been picked to represent the state.
“The school and community have been very supportive,” Zuchowski said of the program. “The judges point out areas to work on.”
This year’s theme for National History Day was Revolution, Reaction and Reform.
Students in grades 7-8 selected a Montana history topic. Students in 9-12 grades had the option of U.S. history or world history.
Frazer’s students now are working on fundraisers and requesting donations to cover expenses for the trip to Washington, D.C.
