School Board Fails To Approve Recommendations For Coaches School Board Fails To Approve Recommendations For Coaches

After the Wolf Point School Board voted not to renew the contracts for both the head boys’ and girls’ basketball coaches, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Perkins says he wants to form a community committee to interview candidates for the position.

Perkins said a goal is to hire the coaches at the June 8 school board meeting.

Not rehired during the board meeting on Wednesday, April 22, were boys’ basketball coach Cole Hanks and girls’ basketball coach Cody Larson. Both have the opportunity to reapply for the position.

Perkins’ plan is to have a committee of five knowledgeable and respected community members.

“I want community people that know the sport,” Perkins said. “I want to bring the town together where we have buy in. I want the community to look at the applications.”

Perkins hopes the committee considers the candidates’ background, work history and look at the whole person. He wants the coach to teach team work, work ethic, character and integrity.

“That’s bigger than any athlete,” Perkins said. “I want someone to develop the character of young men and women. The sport will follow if you do that.”

Although some trustees are in favor of opening every coaching position each year, Perkins feels the best path is for trustees either to accept or reject the recommendation on the agenda for each coach.

“You are going to make some people unhappy and they won’t reapply,” Perkins said. “The procedure keeps it in the hands of the board. If you don’t like anybody, just vote no. It still puts the power in the hands of the board.”

Interested applicants for open positions, should apply to the District Office, 220 Fourth Ave. S., Wolf Point, MT 59201. E-mail submissions can be sent to straeholt@ wolfpoint.k12.mt.us.

Current staff members should submit a letter of interest and a resume specific to the experience for the position. A non-staff member should complete a classified application, a cover letter, a resume, two letters of recommendation, copies of licenses or certifications, college or high school transcripts.

Head coaches that were approved for rehire by trustees on Wednesday were Anthony Red Cloud for football, Stacey Summers for cross country, Cody Larson for flag football, Traci West for fall and winter cheer, Jacob Boysun for speech and drama and Maestro Martinez for wrestling.
