Title VI Committee Discusses Budget, Ideas
The Title VI Parent Committee for Wolf Point Schools held its year-end meeting at the high school on Thursday, April 16.
The budget for the upcoming year will be $145,288.
Items that those funds will cover include salaries and benefits for district home school coordinators and high school Native American Studies teacher.
Committee president Rain Turcotte pointed out there aren’t home school coordinators at the junior high or high school.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Perkins said those schools have attendance clerks.
Perkins said that the school district has applied for a threeyear grant that could bring a quarter of a million dollars to the school district. Those funds could be used to hire a professional handle a variety of issues including mental, emotional and academic challenges. He added that a goal of the grant is to target communications with families.
Turcotte asked if some of the Title VI funding could be utilized to purchase computers. She feels students need to know how to use Apple computers to help them with future careers.
Perkins said that should be a conversation with the school district’s technology committee. “That’s a major shift,” he said.
Imogene Lilley, vice chair of the Title VI committee, said she would like instruction being provided about the local tribes and their history. She said one of the struggles of students is having an identity crisis.
Perkins agreed with Lilley’s ideas, but he feels that a collaborative effort is needed with the tribes, college and schools to put the curriculum in writing.
Members of the Title VI Parent Committee approved the budget for next year.
