New Arrivals Northside Students Enjoy Hatching Of Chicks
There were some welcome additions to the Northside Elementary School’s family last week.
When third-grade teacher Maricar Endozo left her classroom for the day on Monday, April 13, the chicken project featured only two little chicks. When she arrived the next morning, there were 20 chicks along with seven in the incubator.
“The kids were super excited and amazed,” Endozo said on Tuesday morning, April 14. “They are still looking and checking it out.”
As part of the instruction, Portia Magwaba, MSU Extension agent for the Fort Peck Reservation, taught students about the 21-day process of germination time until the chicks hatch.
Northside School Principal Georgie Gourneau said that Magwaba contacted her prior to the school year with interest of implementing 4-H programs into the school.
“She built anticipation because it takes 21 days,” Gourneau explained.
Endozo added, “We hoped they were hatched and were lucky that they hatched.”
For each of the 21 days, Magwaba put information inside a plastic egg for the students to share. The students also saw different stages of the eggs.
“They learned quite a bit,” Gourneau said. “It was a hands-on activity.”
When the chicks are ready to leave, they will be taken to the family farm of paraprofessional Samantha Goodman.
