Culbertson opened track practice with 34 athletes out with 21 boys and 13 girls.

Coach Dave Solem believes this is the best turnout since around 2009 or 2010.

“This is a big team,” the coach said. “It’s a ton of kids for us this year.”

The returning athletes include Brooks Solem, a junior, who placed second in the javelin and sixth in the high jump at last year’s Class C state meet.

Ian Snyder, a senior, is also back. Snyder finished fifth in the 100-meter dash and sixth in the 200-meter dash at last season’s state meet.

Plenny Williams earned third place in the discus at last year’s state meet. After an injury during the basketball season, Williams is anticipated to return to action at some point this season.

Among the other returning athletes for the boys’ squad include sprinter Harrison Green and distance runner Cal Steppler.

The addition of senior Kaden Featherston should help the Cowboys in throwing events.

“We’re fairly strong in weights,” Coach Solem said. Another addition to keep an eye on is freshman Trust Magwaba in sprints.

On the girls’ side, Emma Berwick in the discus and Rebekah Ellerkamp in the 3200 placed sixth at the divisional meet last season.

Other returning athletes for the girls include Ayden Ator in weights and Bella Petersen in sprints, Newcomer Kalia Featherston should also help the Cowgirls.

The Cowgirls have a good freshman class including Anna Steppler and Charity Wilbanks. Steppler earned All-State honors in cross county by placing eighth at the state meet.

Coach Solem said goals include for the Cowboys to win both the district and divisional titles. The hope is for the girls to place third in the team standings at the district meet.
