Gabe Uy of Frontier Schools came away with top honors from this year’s Roosevelt County spelling bee held in Brockton on Tuesday, March 3.

Uy said his motivation included following in his brother Ernest’s footsteps as a county spelling champion. Ernest earned the title in 2012. Gabe said a sister and another brother also enjoyed success at the county level.

Gabe won the contest in the 13th round.

Caitlyn Mendoza of Wolf Point earned second place in the competition, which featured 34 students.

Dreyton Red Eagle of Poplar placed third. Keane DeJano of Brockton took fourth. Tristen Chapman of Poplar earned fifth place.

After two rounds of the bee, there were 12 students remaining in the contest. There were six participants still standing after three rounds.

Other spellers in the contest included the following: Bainville: Carys Holbrook, Madison Blakely, Riley Radke, Tacey Traeger and Xander Vaira.

Brockton: Yeshua Santos, Leena Todd, Nadalyn Spotted Wolf and Maleena Comes Last.

Culbertson: Beau Becker, Chloe Acson, Roman Emerson, Parker Steppler and Easton Steppler.

Froid: Chase Parenteau, Colton Nordwick, Jacob Kalal, Klaire Rumsey and Buckley Elvsaas.

Frontier: Oliver Buckles, Zarrah Gonzales, Maxton Moran and Keyden Beston.

Poplar: Uriah Granbois, Knox Spotted Bull and Wade Beaudry.

Wolf Point: Deklyn Lilley, Freya Red Elk and Hope Pipestem.
