Two Seek House District 31 Post

There will be at least two candidates for Montana House District 31 during this election cycle.

Lance FourStar of Wolf Point filed in Helena on the first official day for filing on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Natalie Weeks O’Neal of Poplar announced on social media on the same day that she will seek the office. Both are Democrats.

FourStar is a current Wolf Point city council member. He unsuccessfully ran for the state legislator in 2024. He has served as director of the Montana American Indian Caucus for the past two legislative sessions. Other offices for FourStar include treasurer of the Montana Democratic Party, co-founding member of the nation’s first tribal committee and chairman of the Montana Democratic Party’s finance committee.

He said he has worked tirelessly for years as an activist for Native American’s civil rights and threats to Native American’s communities.

O’Neal officially filed on Wednesday, Feb. 18. On a video on Facebook, O’Neal said she supports a strong eduction system, affordable and accessible health care for all people and protecting land, water and way of life. She is a native of Montana and a health care professional.

She said she is running as a Democrat because she believes legislators should work for the people and not for special interest.

The position has been held by Frank Smith, Democrat of Poplar. Smith has announced that he will not seek re-election after serving in Helena as a legislator for 25 years.

The primary election is Tuesday, June 2.
