Lustre News
Monday was an exciting day for seventh-eighth grade students attending MATHCOUNTS competition in Savage with their coach, Lisa Neufeld. The Lustre Team placed first in the team competition! Harlo Reddig placed first individually, followed by Justin Schiller in second place individually. Justin Schiller also placed first in the Countdown Round!
Neufeld said “MATHCOUNTS starts at the beginning of the school year. The whole seventh-eighth grade participates. The kids take a test at the end of November and the top five kids are the team. This year was the first year we had to do two tie-breakers to decide the fifth student.”
After the team is decided in December, she works with those five students every Wednesday for 30 minutes.
The team competed against Savage, Culbertson, Glasgow and Wibaux. She said they do a “Sprint Test and Target test to determine individual winners. The team test joins these scores to determine the team winner.”
The top eight students sit up front and answer problems. They go head to head and are given 45 seconds to answer a question. The winner stays and the loser is out. Then the winner plays the next student. Now they get to work on math for another five weeks before State on March 16 in Butte!”
The sophomore class sold truffles as a fundraiser for their class just in time for Valentine’s Day. They took orders so they could deliver them freshly made on Saturday. It helps remind us to do something good to show appreciation for our spouses, and loved ones. The grade school classes enjoyed their valentine parties too.
The regular basketball season finished with games against Frazer and Nashua on Thursday and Friday. The varsity teams will go into district tournament this weekend in Glasgow.
Roads are drying off in the 35-42 degree temperatures this week. That is great, as many miles are driven for tournaments and Schmeckfest is coming March 27. Reserve the date!
