Lustre News
Fierce winds blew all night in Lustre on Thursday, Jan. 15. They continued Friday, and Montana made national news with 400 miles of its territory battling 60-80 mph winds. It was the strongest winds we have had in a long time. We were so thankful for the safety for those traveling, including the teams to Circle for tough games. The varsity girls lost, but the varsity boys won 73-59.
The LCHS gym was packed on Saturday, Jan. 17, for the four Lustre-Scobey basketball games. The community wore their Sarel Support Team shirts to welcome a beloved LCHS teacher home after finishing his nine months of leukemia treatments. Mr. and Mrs. Matthyser arrived just before the games began, having battled the same winds we had all the way. Just before the varsity teams were introduced, and after Jerson Ayuno’s high school choir sang in harmony our national anthem, Coach Randy Reddig invited the Matthyser family to come forward and said “There are some things much more important than sports, and this is one of them,” as he welcomed them and on our behalf. He thanked the Scobey teams “for sharing this moment with us.” It was heartening to see students and players welcoming their teacher back heartily.
The sophomore class, under the guidance of Mr. Lu offered a soup and pie supper fundraiser with lemonade during Saturday’s game. They also had a silent auction of several pies, and the meal hit the spot on such a cold day. All the teams played their hearts out, but Lustre lost their contests.
We welcome also Noell Quinn Ortmann to our community, born in November to Wacey and Jamie Ortmann. Grandparents are Sam and Nancy Ortman of Lustre and Mr. and Mrs. Harrington of Hammond.
We express our condolences to Pastor and Mrs. Lenihan and their family, who have returned from California, after the death of Debbie’s father, whose memorial service was Jan. 10.
