Wolf Point Enjoys Good Turnout For Wrestling Season
Wolf Point’s wrestling program begins the campaign with close to 20 athletes this year. The number is pretty much split evenly between boys and girls.
“It’s good,” Coach Maestro Martinez said of the turnout. “I figured we would get better numbers this year because of the wrestling room.”
He explains that the new wrestling room and weight room at the school have been beneficial. “It’s a huge difference,” Martinez said. “We can do more drills and have more room.”
Leading Wolf Point’s girls’ team is defending state champion Anna Matejovsky. Last season, she became the state’s first female eighth grade wrestling champion and Wolf Point’s first female wrestling title holder. She finished the season with a 46-2 record.
Other wrestlers back for Wolf Point’s girls include Aniya Smoker, Jeina Reum, Paisley Brunner and Lakealah Mays. Smoker qualified for the state meet last season.
Cali Gorder, an eighth-grader, has enjoyed a large amount of success at the junior high level and AAU tournaments.
On the boys’ side, Jesse Reed is back after placing second at the state meet last year. Reed finished last season with a 32-12 record. Most of his toughest opponents were seniors last year. Kayeiko Villaluz is also a returning wrestler in the boys’ division.
Seniors Sam Boysun and Kasey Reed are expected to make impacts after returning to the sport this season.
The Wolves will open their season at the Eagle Invitational in Sidney on Dec. 5-6.
“It’s the toughest tournament of the whole year to start with,” Martinez said.
Wolf Point will host a mixer on Thursday, Dec. 11.
