County Adds School Safety Committee

The Roosevelt County commissioners approved the establishment of a child information and school safety team during their weekly meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 28.

Montana Code Annotated 52-2-211 requires that county commissioners ensure the formation of a county or regional child information and school safety team.

After being informed of the requirement, Roosevelt County Superintendent of Schools Erika Fyfe organized the committee to serve on the school safety team.

“It’s a good thing to be set up,” Commissioner Gordon Oelkers said during the meeting.

According to the statute, “the purpose of the team is ensure the timely exchange and sharing of information that one or more team members may be able to use in serving a child in the course of their professions and occupations, including but not limited to abused or neglected children, delinquent youth, and youth in need of intervention, and of information relating to issues of school safety.”

Fyfe said committee members will share concerns and cover such topics as neglect cases and school safety.

The committee will consists of youth court representative Sheana Rose, county attorney Thomas Bleicher, Department of Public Health and Human Services representative Danae Sheeran, county superintendent Erika Fyfe, county sheriff Jason Frederick along with school superintendents Keith Hays of Frontier, Steven Mayhue of Froid, Keith Erickson of Poplar, Loverty Erickson of Brockton, Darin Hannum of Bainville, Nicole Simonsen of Culbertson and Dr. David Perkins of Wolf Point.

Also during the meeting, commissioners approved having an Extension agent serve as an ex officio member of the fair board. The agent will be a non-voting member. Commissioners explained that the position will make the agent’s role more official so the agent can be involved and informed regarding the county fair.

Commissioners approved the renewal of the CRS agreement regarding inmate medical insurance. Cost is $1.25 per inmate per day.

Coverage includes medical insurance, treatment of mental or nervous disorder, treatment of substance abuse, treatment of pregnancy and treatment of AIDS, ARC or HIV.

The resignation of Penni Benkler as Justice of the Peace clerk was received.
