Culbertson High School senior Mariana Burciaga has gone to Culbertson’s schools her entire life and she enjoys the community.

“Mostly, I like that I know just about everybody here,” Burciaga said of living in Culbertson.

During her free time, she works at the day care. Ages of the children span from 1 year old up through the fifth grade. She said the 3-5 year olds are the most fun.

Her activities have included playing volleyball since the sixth grade.

“I like the team and how supportive they are,” Burciaga said.

One career highlight was being able to play volleyball with her older sister, Perla, a couple of years ago.

She plans to compete in track for the first time this spring. Possible events are javelin, discus and maybe the long jump.

She also serves as secretary for the school’s student council.

Burciaga’s favorite class is history taught by Dave Solem.

“I like the stories that he tells,” Burciaga said.

Her favorite teacher is Christina Olson. “She’s always there when we need her for anything,” Burciaga said.

After high school, Burciaga plans to take a “gap” year when classes. She is considering a career in education.
