It was a time for excitement along with memories when the first Weyrauch Wild Horse Race was conducted to kick off the Wolf Point Wild Horse Ranch Rodeo on Wednesday, July 9.

Two long-time local supporters of wild horse racing, Art Weyrauch, who died in 2012, and Jacob Weyrauch, who died in 2008, were recognized at the memorial event.

Organizer Jarod Weyrauch explained that he went to the ranch rodeo committee with the idea to have the race prior to the ranch rodeo because Wolf Point loves wild horse races. His father, Art, often purchased a team during calcuttas while his brother, Jacob, was actually a participant in the races.

Jarod explained that all 100 percent of funds from the Weyrauch competition went to participants and wild horse expenses. He is thankful to people who supported the first-year event.

“It’s just to boost the ranch rodeo,” Jarod said.

Rodeo announcer Robert Toavs said at the event, “The family’s legacy will continue in this arena.”

Five teams competed in Wednesday’s wild horse race. Taking first place was the B& G Construction team featuring Chris Hajek, Lanny Bevington and Colten Haman.

“We have plans for it to grow and to do it every year,” Jarod said.

Meanwhile, the Weyrauch family stays active in the thrilling activity. Jarod’s nephew Gage Weyrauch received a $10,000 gift from an anonymous donor for being the youngest wild horse race participant at the 100th Wolf Point Wild Horse Stampede. “He’s still racing and winning buckles with me,” Jarod said.

Jarod’s 16-year-old son is also getting involved in the activity.

“It’s just family entertainment,” Jarod said. “It’s going down from generation to generation for my family.”
