Committee Continues School Improvement Work Committee Continues School Improvement Work

A meeting featuring school officials and parents tackled district improvement goals for the Wolf Point School District on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

Wolf Point Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Perkins said that the objectives of the meetings are to address areas such as academics, safety, community relations and parental engagement.

“The portrait of a graduate” established by the committee includes: Holistic (lifelong learner), high expectations (college/career ready, motivated), relationships (social-emotional, empathetic, effective communicator), integrity (cultural), respect (attendance matters, prepared) and pride (strong in identity, courageous in spirit).

Perkins said that “rigorous action at the high school” has included setting up interventions at the high school, working on engagement with students, coaching teachers and personal development.

Principal Kim Hanks added that some pre-ACT testing has been conducted with juniors and that teachers are working with curriculum resources.

As far as the status of the Catalyze Challenge Grant, Perkins reported that there has been great collaboration including support from the Department of Labor, the National Indian Education Association, two colleges, economic development offices, the Wolf Point Chamber of Commerce and the Office of Public Instruction.

“Hopefully, we will get it. I’m pretty confident that we will,” Perkins said of the grant.

He added the group will concentrate on an Integrated Strategic Action Plan during its next two meetings.

A goal at the elementary level is that reading and math scores will increase by at least 3 percent by the end of the 2025 spring data period.

“I don’t expect us to improve by 3 percent. I expect us to improve more,” Perkins said.

A goal at the junior high/high school level is for the amount of students in the bottom group to decrease by 3 percent for math and reading.
