Knierim Scholarships Available To Students

The Knierim family is offering scholarships to students currently enrolled in higher education, either in Montana or out of state, if the student is from Valley, Daniels, Sheridan or Roosevelt counties.

A new feature of the scholarship is that the information can now be found on the internet at knierimfamilyscholarship. com and applications can be sent to Box 29, Glasgow, MT 59230 before July 15.

Also new this year is a gift from the family of Pearl Nickels in her memory for students entering education or nursing. Nickels was a longtime rancher in northeastern Montana and an early representative of a company that promoted new varieties of cattle breeds. She taught in one-room country schools, farmed, was an accomplished musician and had a curiosity about the wide world. The family is deeply appreciative of the excellent medical care that was given to Nichels in her final months and wants to help fund some of the necessary schooling for these students.

The scholarships were established by the Knierim family as a memorial to Dr. and Mrs. FM Knierim, a doctor who came in the early days of building Fort Peck Dam and treated men who were injured while constructing the dam. Dr. Knierim was one of the first physicians in Fort Peck and went on to serve as chief of staff at Francis Mahon Deaconess Hospital for more than 40 years. Mrs. Knierim was active in community concerns like the library board, Girl Scouts and was the organist at the Episcopal Church for many years.
