Chicks Arrive At Poplar High School

There have been some new additions at Poplar High School during the last two weeks.
Teacher Ted Fulgham’s agriculture education class has enjoyed the opportunity of witnessing several chicks being hatched in the classroom. Fulgram said eight of 24 chicks were hatched as of last Thursday and he anticipated more to occur by the start of this week.
“Twelve of the chicks we hatched last year,” Fulgram explained.
The class had some exotic breeds including black Australorp chicks. The students will also deal with turkeys and ducks. As part of the assignments, students will need to identify breeds.
“The kids love it,” Fulgham said of the course. “They get to name them and we figure out how to weigh them.”
When the chicks grow a little bit, they are placed in pens on the opposite end of the agriculture education classroom.
At the end of May, the chicks are given to area families who wish to have some egg layers, Fulgham said.
