The Wolf Point Community Organization has new leadership after an election took place during its meeting on Monday, Nov. 20.

Former chair Roxanne Gourneau resigned because she now serves on the tribal executive board. Holly Hamilton was voted the new chair. Kris FourStar will remain as vice chair. Jason Hamilton Sr. will serve as interim secretary.

During the TEB report, council member Marva Chapman said officials are researching whether the tribes can receive taxes for marijuana sold on the reservation. She said the hope is the taxes for marijuana sales can use the same formula as gas and cigarette taxes.

TEB member Gourneau expressed her dissatisfaction with the tribe’s law and justice system. She has made the motion for an evaluation of law enforcement by an outof-state investigator. Gourneau is urging for strategic planning to take place regarding economic development. She is researching whether residents could vote to have term limits established for TEB officials.

Gourneau also expressed her concerns about the health and education systems. She wants to know each schools’ proficiency and grades. “Why aren’t parents taking kids to school? What’s the problem?”she said.

The activities committee reported that an elders’ dinner held on Nov. 18 was well attended and great feedback was received.

WPCO approved $2,000 for the Wolf Point Little Paws’ Head Start program to purchase Christmas gifts for its students.

Wolf Point City Council member Lance FourStar reported that he is making progress in efforts to reduce drug trafficking through Amtrak. He mentioned license readers.

FourStar said has held positive conversations with Sen. Jon Tester’s office.

“I’m always looking for extra help,” FourStar said to audience members. “Don’t hesitant to call me.”
