Froid Council Talks Nuisance Properties, Sand Mine

The Froid Town Council held their regular meeting May 8. Council members Gale Standlund, Tyler Harris and Laurie Young were in attendance, as were Mayor Sheri Crain and Clerk LeAnn Johnson. There was one audience member.

Mayor Crain discussed a recent application of a frack sand mine south of Froid, She said the matter has been taken up by the Roosevelt County Commissioners and added that Gordon Oelkers is spearheading oversight at the county level. Area residents and ag operators should contact Oelkers for more information.

Nuisance properties were on the agenda. Council members discussed strategies for tackling overgrown lots and blight properties. Vacant properties are a top priority, as they often become homes for unwanted animals. A list is being compiled of delinquent properties and talks are underway to publish the list in poster form for public display. Contact the town for more information. Resources are available for property owners seeking help with metal and wood recycling. “Let’s get the town cleaned up,” said Crain.

A task order was approved as part of the process for receiving ARPA funds. Funds are still being distributed to municipalities.

An Arbor Day celebration was set for May 10. Two trees are being planted and a community ceremony is being held with participation from area schoolkids.

Water, sewer and garbage accounts were reviewed. Claims were also approved. The next meeting is set for June 12 at 6:30 p.m.
