County Advertises For Appointed Attorney

Roosevelt County is advertising for an appointed county attorney, but that doesn’t mean any changes in the county attorney’s office will necessarily take place.

Janet Christoffersen agreed to serve as interim county attorney starting in mid-February for a four-month period. With more than half of the time completed, county commissioners are advertising for the position in order to keep their options open.

Commissioner Gordon Oelkers said he has heard of a couple possible candidates, but no one has applied for the position as of late last week.

Oelkers said Christoffersen is willing to continue serving in the role if she is needed.

Christoffersen is a former county attorney in Richland County.

Commissioners needed to appoint a county attorney after Frank Piocos was removed from the office of county attorney when District Judge Katherine Bidegaray ruled Piocos wasn’t an eligible candidate in the 2022 general election.

County commissioners have indicated that an election for county attorney won’t take place until 2024, and that person won’t officially take office until the start of 2025.
