Wolf Point Considering Malt Liquor Ban

The Wolf Point City Council met Monday, March 21. The first reading of a malt liquor ban ordinance was passed for the city limits of Wolf Point, mirroring language developed by the Fort Peck Tribes for the wider reservation.

The second reading and final approval is planned for the next council meeting, Once passed, area businesses will have 30 days to comply.

Said council member Lance Fourstar, “We’re doing the right thing passing this ordinance.”

A motion was passed to promote Wolf Point Police Department Sergeant Enrique Morales to Lieutenant. Taylor Martin’s resignation from the department was accepted effective March 10.

Tori Matejovsky and Briana Vine from Great Northern Development Corp. gave the council an update on various Custer Street improvements that are in process and related grant programs.

Tina Betshismedicine, Dr. Heather Grimm and members of the public appeared to press the council about procedures for testing dogs at the city pound for canine brucellosis. Several dogs were euthanized in recent weeks as communications broke down over the issue.

John Bach from Interstate Engineering spoke to the council about two task orders needed for asphalt paving maintenance at the airport in the amount of $49,870, with 95 percent of the cost was covered by the FAA. Those were passed.

Attorney Phillip DeFelice addressed the council about delays in his process regarding the Agland Co-op subdivision. A special meeting of the Parks/Recreation/Cemetery/ Tree board is being organized to address the issue.

Police chief Alicia Morales presented her monthly activity report for February.

Police Commission vacancies were discussed. Darin Weinberger, retired chief Jeff Harada and Brandi Lynn Wilkinson were put forward as appointments by Mayor Chris Dschaak. The council passed the appointments.

Greg Lukasik from Great West Engineering gave the council an update on wastewater system improvements, which should continue in the spring. A task order amendment was passed for $279,000. Grant requests were approved in the amounts of $4,625 and $1,640. Per Barry Damschen, the council discussed taking Daniels County waste at the landfill. Talks are ongoing.

The treasurer’s report was passed. January minutes were passed.

The next council meeting is set for April 17 at 7 p.m.
