Local Student Receives Citizenship Award Local Student Receives Citizenship Award

An assembly was held at Wolf Point Junior High last week to salute a student who played a key role in saving a life at the swimming pool last summer.

Makenzie Jackson, a seventhgrade student, was presented the Wolf Point Citizenship Award for her efforts in saving a local boy on June 11, 2022.

Joshua Bushman, one of Wolf Point’s senior lifeguards, recently received the Red Cross Lifesaving Award for the incident.

After Jackson scooped the boy out of the water, Bushman used CPR on the youngster.

Recreation director Dan Horsmon said that Bushman has noted that he believes that Jackson was more of a hero than he was.

“Makenzie was willing to take action at the right time,” Horsmon said.

At the assembly, Jackson explained that she saw the boy under the water and that he needed urgent assistance.

“I went under the rope to him,” she said. “He was heavy because of the water inside him.”

School trustee Roxanne Gourneau, who is Jackson’s grandmother, provided some motivational words to the students.

“You are just like Makenzie, each and every one are a hero to someone in your life,” Gourneau said. “You’re all heroes. We want to see more of those positive things in our school.”
