Lustre Girls Fight Off Frazer, 57-42

Lustre’s girls’ basketball team emerged with a 57-42 first-round win over Frazer in the first round of the District 3C tournament in Glasgow on Wednesday, Feb. 15.

The underdog Bearcubs put up a good fight as they trailed by only a 30-24 halftime margin and just 33-26 midway into the third quarter. Lustre, however, ended the fourth quarter with a free throw by Alexa Reddig and a 16-footer by Lauryn Holzrichter for a 36-26 advantage.

Frazer’s Shakira Beston opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer, but the Lions earned a 42-32 lead on the scoring of Aubri Holzrichter and Reddig. A technical foul on Frazer’s bench resulted in three points by A. Holzrichter for a 45-32 margin.

After the Bearcubs fought back to 45-36, Reddig and Grace Brown accounted for five free throws to put the lead to 50-36 with 2:55 left. Free tosses by Reddig and Hope Marottek gave the Lions a 53-39 advantage with only 1:17 remaining.

Lustre’s top scorers were A. Holzrichter with 19, Brown with 17 and Reddig with 15 points.

Rounding out the scoring were Marottek with three, L. Holzrichter with two and Jaden Gibson with one.

A. Holzrichter finished with nine rebounds and three assists.

The Lions made 23 of their 36 free-throw attempts in the contest.

Baily Beston led Frazer with 15 points. Also scoring were Shakira Beston with eight, Angeline White with six, Liana Jackson with six, Audrey Smoker with five and Angel Nelligan with two points.

The Lions gained a 13-10 lead in the first quarter. After the scoring of A. Holzrichter led Lustre to a 27-16 advantage, Frazer battled back to 29-22 on the scoring of Smoker, B. Beston and Jackson.
