From The Pastor’s Desk

I am sitting at Gate C at Logan international airport in Billings, waiting to board flight 1773 for the Saturday flight scheduled to depart at 5:58 p.m. which is destined for Wolf Point. Boarding time has come and gone. It is now 6:15 p.m. My inner thoughts reverberate the famous words from outer space, “Houston, we have a problem!” There are three people scheduled for this flight. The other two are not at the gate. It seems I am the only passenger on the flight.

I served the Assembly of God Church as interim pastor for the past 14 months. The 600-mile round trip and 9 hours of driving were long and wearisome. However, I am motivated by the excitement of ministering to a congregation of people who were faithful to attend the services and attentive to the Word of God. They are easy to love, and I feel refreshed on my drive home each weekend rehearsing my experience in the presence of the Lord with His special people. Early in December, I discovered I could fly to Wolf Point in an hour and 10 minutes. The cost of the flight was cheaper than the gas in my car.

The gatekeeper is briskly making his way around the desk and walks up to me and says, “Flight 1773 has been cancelled due to icing conditions in the upper atmosphere. The pilot has deemed it unsafe to fly. We have rescheduled your flight for 8 a.m. in the morning. That should give you enough time to get to your church service.”

It is now 5:30 a.m. on Sunday morning and I am awake. I know I need to be at the airport by 7 a.m. to check in and clear security.

Everything is smooth and without delay. The man behind the counter welcomes me on the flight and quickly checks my luggage and on to security I go.

I am called to board the airplane precisely at the right time. The pilots are doing the prefight, as I board the aircraft. As I wait for takeoff, I begin to think about what has just happened. I am the only passenger on my way to a church service on a flight made just for me. I feel like a King’s kid. I just simply must pause and offer a prayer of thanks to God for He does all things well.

The landing is perfect, and I am ready for church. I step out of the terminal and think there should be a limousine waiting to pick me up. Then reality settles in and I wait for my ride to the church.

( Editor’s note: Pastor Bob and Sharon Unterseher will officiate their final service at the Wolf Point Assembly of God Church this Sunday at 10:45 a.m., Feb. 26. You are invited to join the congregation in a time of celebration. Pastor Bob will share a message titled, Not By Might, But By My Spirit).
