Cowboys Lose To Wildcats For Fifth Place

The Culbertson Cowboys couldn’t recover from a poor start and lost to Plentywood, 56-47, in the fifth-place game of the District 2C basketball tournament held in Culbertson on Monday, Feb. 20.

The Cowboys fell behind by a 16-4 margin in the first quarter. Trailing 23-8, the Cowboys struck for four straight points on a short jumper by Bridger Salvevold and a drive by Peyton Perkins.

Plentywood’s Easton Tommerup scored with 1:56 left in the half, but two free throws by Salvevold and a drive by Perkins pulled the Cowboys to 25-16 at the half.

Plentywood gained a 34-16 advantage with the first nine points of the third quarter on seven points by Tommerup and a hoop by Conner Howard.

The Wildcats went on to earn a 46-23 lead at the end of the period.

Behind by a 48-28 margin, the Cowboys struck for seven straight points. Four points by Avance and two free throws by Perkins got the Cowboys to 52-41 with 1:19 left.

After Plentywood’s Howard scored a basket, Culbertson tallied the next six points on hoops by Mo Bighorn, Perkins and Avance to get as close as 54-47 with 22 seconds remaining. Top scorers for the Cowboys were Avance with 16, Perkins with 15 and Bighorn with 12 points. Salvevold added four points.

Leading Plentywood were Tommerup with 16, Carson Solberg with 12 and Howard with 10 points.
