Harris Faces Attempted Escape, Criminal Mischief Charges

Matthew Lavelle Harris is facing seven charges including attempted escape in Roosevelt County. He is scheduled to make his initial appearance in district court on Wednesday, Dec. 14.

Along with the felony charge of attempted escape, there are two felony criminal mischief charges. The other four charges are for misdemeanor criminal mischief.

According to court documents, the attempted escape charge is for breaking a glass window while trying to escape from the Roosevelt County Detention facility Nov. 3.

One of the felony criminal mischief charges is for damaging a glass window in the reception room with a steel box. Damage was estimated at more than $1,500.

The other felony criminal mischief charge is for damaging the counter top in the reception room with a steel box. Damage was estimate at more than $1,500.

If convicted of the attempted escape charge, Harris faces the maximum penalties of 20 years in prison, a $5,000 fine or both. Maximum penalties for felony criminal mischief is 10 years in jail, a $50,000 fine or both. Penalties for misdemeanor criminal mischief are 6 months in jail, a $1,500 fine or both.
