Culbertson High School senior Makena Hauge is accustomed to achieving success in her high school activities.

As a member of Culbertson’s BPA program, Hauge won the state championship in the server administration using Microsoft category. The achievement earned Hauge a trip to the national conference held in Dallas, Texas, last spring.

“It was really cool,” she said of the national event.

Also at the state meet, Hauge placed third for Linux operating system fundamentals and took eighth for user administration using Cisco.

She is thankful that her mother, Valli Hauge, has served as the BPA program’s advisor for the past several school years.

Being a consistent honor roll selection, Makena is a member of the National Honor Society in Culbertson.

Sports keeps her busy throughout the year as she is a standout in basketball, volleyball and track. She has earned All-State recognition in both basketball and volleyball.

She started playing basketball when she was only 5 or 6 years old at the YMCA in Billings. She moved to Culbertson when she was in the first grade.

“It’s just what I enjoy,” Hauge said of why basketball is her favorite activity. “I like being with my teammates.”

During the past three summers, she has played for the Select Basketball AAU Team in California, Arizona, Nevada and Washington.

“It has given me a lot of exposure,” Hauge said of the AAU tournaments. “A lot of coaches have seen me.”

She has also developed positive relationships with her summer teammates. “They have become my best friends.”

Hauge says volleyball is her second favorite sport. A memorable highlight was qualifying for the divisional tournament last year.

She describes her father as her role model.

When she’s not playing sports, she’s watching them on TV. Her favorite teams are the Minnesota Vikings and Golden State Warriors.

Her favorite teacher is Dave Solem, and her favorite class is government.

She is undecided of which college she will attend, but she plans to study athletic training.

“It’s because of my love for sports,” Hauge said of her career interest. “I always tape the other girls before games.”

She’s thankful for the education that she received in Culbertson.

“It’s very small and you know everybody,” Hauge said.
