Wolf Point city councilman Lance Fourstar says city officials are looking for ways to make Triangle Park more attractive to visitors, but he notes attitudes also must change in order to have an improved atmosphere.

“The parks commission is open for suggestions,” Fourstar said. “I think we need to make it more friendly.”

He explained that some ideas have included adding lights at the park and having a memorial in honor of Chief Redstone. Town Pump has indicated to city official that the business is willing to build a fence near the diesel pumps area.

Fourstar likes the suggestions of adding information about the buffalo ranch along with other possible tourism displays available.

“Just anything to make it more inviting,” Fourstar added.

He feels that banning the sale of malt liquor would be a step in the right direction. He said that the Fort Peck Tribes has already approved banning sales of malt liquor. He feels the city council will also approve banning malt liquor sales once a new city attorney is in place.

“It would make it unavailable for people on the reservation,” Fourstar said. “It’s just killing our people.”

He says currently individuals are panhandling for $10 so they can purchase five tall cans of malt liquor. After they drink those cans, they head back looking for more money.

“I don’t think the people are necessarily the problem,” Fourstar said.

He suggests that businesses hire private security to discourage panhandlers. He says public intoxication arrests by the city have increased quite a bit during the last few months.

Fourstar feels additional rehabilitation resources are needed. He notes that a “healing lounge” for people to have coffee, work on research and attend AA meetings is being planned.

“There needs to be solutions instead of saying we’ve banned malt liquor, now you’re on your own,” Fourstar said. “The biggest thing is a shift in behavior.”

He asks for the public’s support to improve the Triangle Park area. “We all need solutions. If anybody has a better idea, contact me,” Fourstar said. He can be reached at 406-7909503.
