Trustees Hire New Basketball Coach

Cameron McCormick was hired as Wolf Point High School’s new head boys’ basketball coach and junior high social studies teacher during a school board meeting on Monday, June 13.

Concerns were expressed, however, regarding McCormick’s history of not staying at schools for long periods of time. He served as Lame Deer’s athletic director and girls’ basketball coach last school year.

Trustee Bif Loucks questioned how invested McCormick will be in Wolf Point’s schools.

“As far as coaching and teaching, it’s a double whammy,” Loucks said. “I think he’s been at six schools in six years.”

McCormick’s coaching history includes Lodge Grass’ girls’ basketball, Rocky Boy’s girls basketball, Northern Cheyenne’s girls’ basketball and Absarokee’s boys’ basketball.

He guided Lodge Grass to its first Southern B divisional tournament in nine years.

Trustee Lanette Clark said, “I know teachers are hard to find these days. Maybe he hasn’t found the right fit.”

Trustees hired McCormick as social studies teacher, Richie Tumonong as Southside computer teacher and Wendy Connelley as high school math teacher.

Later in the meeting, trustees considered extra-curricular hirings.

Trustee Lawrence Hamilton noted that McCormick was recommended by the athletic director and a committee. Hamilton said he did have a concern that not everybody was interviewed.

Hamilton said he will support the athletic director’s recommendation. He added the basketball summer program has already started.

The motion to approve McCormick to coach boys’ basketball passed.

Other coaches hired at the meeting included Cole Baker as high school assistant cross country coach, Cristina Moore as junior high head cross country coach, Hannah Struttmann as volunteer assistant cross country coach, Keyvin Brock as junior high football coach, Scott Vandall as high school/junior high volunteer football coach and Ron Chavez as high school/junior high volunteer football coach.
