Hughes Receives FBI Commendation

Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Devon Hughes received a letter of commendation from Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent Paul Haertel for work leading the arrest and conviction of two individuals for trafficking methamphetamine in Roosevelt County and the Fort Peck Indian Reservation.

Roosevelt County Undersheriff John Summers shared the letter with the Northern Plains Independent.

Said Haertel, “On 12/16/2018, Deputy Hughes conducted a traffic stop of two subjects on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. Deputy Hughes observed a pistol in the vehicle and learned one of the subjects was wanted by the Fort Peck Tribes on a tribal arrest warrant. Deputy Hughes observed the other subject, the driver of the vehicle, appeared to be under the influence of methamphetamine. Deputy Hughes conducted an investigation which led to the arrest of both subjects and the recovery of firearms and methamphetamine. Deputy Hughes’s case was subsequently referred to the FBI for additional investigation.”

According to the correspondence, the investigation revealed that the subject was involved in the transport and trafficking of methamphetamine from Billings to the reservation. The driver pleaded guilty to federal charges and was sentenced to 80 months imprisonment.

“Deputy Hughes’s observant and proactive law enforcement led to the disruption of a drug trafficking organization that was trafficking methamphetamine in Roosevelt County and on the FPIR,” said Haertel. “Please extend my appreciation to Deputy Hughes for his outstanding efforts in this case.”
