Emily Joyce McConnell, 73, of Wolf Point died at the Billings Clinic Intermediate Care Center on Sunday, Oct 16, 2022. She was born at home in Frazer to Twila Marie Long Knife and James J. McConnell (aka Jimmy Skunk). She was the firstborn of 14 siblings. Her nickname was Apples. She was a member of the Mormon Church and was a devout and faithful Christian. She loved reading the Bible and daily Bible readings. She was always making donations to different ministries and save the children. She was very caring and loved to help others, as well as her family. She was raised by her grandmothers, Helen Attacks Four Eagle and Rosaline Long Knife, and her parents. She attended school up to the 8th grade at Frazer. She attended High School in Pierre, S.D., through the 11th grade and later earned her GED. She furthered her education the Job Corps in Clinton, Neb. She later returned home to Wolf Point where she lived all her life. She married Frank Birdsbill Jr. From this union, they had three sons. She worked at the Living Good Motel in Summers in the earlier years and later worked as a housekeeper at Faith Home in Wolf Point. She loved listening to the oldies, such as the Supremes,

Lori Ann TalksDifferent, No Wa Waste Wiya (Good Singing Woman), 28, of Wolf Point died Monday, Oct. 17, 2022. She was born July 21, 1994, in Havre to her mother Elisha TalksDifferent and father Delano Clancy-Laverdure. She was a very loving soul and had a contagious smile. She attended the Montana Youth Challenge Academy in Dillon in 2016. She finished the program as platoon leader and she received her G.E.D. Although she went through some rough patches in life, she always got back on her feet with a huge smile that brightened up a room. She liked to play jokes on family and friends. She worked at the tribal courts for a short time as a receptionist, but later took a job at Faith Home in Wolf Point as a CNA, which she loved. She met Ryan WhiteHorse in 2016. She loved her brothers and sister and was like a mother to them. She later had children of her own, two sons, Payton and Casey. Huber Lee Wright, 68, of Wolf Point died Oct. 14, 2022. He was born June 15, 1954, to James Huber Wright and Lena Grace McConnell. He grew up in Frazer and attended Frazer High School where he met his high school sweetheart, Debra Bauer. They both graduated in the spring of 1972 and were married the following year on Oct. 6, 1973. A year later, daughter Christine Nickole was born in July 1974. In December 1974, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving three years before being honorably discharged in August 1980. Daughter Sondra Lee was born in June 1978. He worked as a tribal police officer for a brief time and worked for Kenco Refinery for a number of years. For

Jeffery “Stuffy” Walking Eagle Sr., 32, of Wolf Point died Oct. 15, 2022, at Trinity Hospital. He was born Sept. 21, 1990, to John L. Walking Eagle Sr. and Hattie L. Shoots. He grew up in Brockton with grandmother Theresa. He then moved to Poplar with his father in 2000, before finally settling down in Wolf Point with his mother. He went to school at Brockton elementary school, Wahpeton Indian school and Poplar school. He loved to be around his children, family and friends. He also enjoyed the days he spent with his sister Jonelle, brother Shuggz and niece Sean De’Ja in Bismarck, N.D. He was always joking or kidding with his nieces and nephews. He liked to go for walks to go check out his friends that were out about too. He worked at Taco Bell in Bismarck N.D., and Albertsons in Wolf Point. Emily Marie Walker Brown, 24, died Oct. 12, 2022. She was born Oct. 12, 1998, in Great Falls and was raised in Wolf Point. She went to school in Wolf Point and Brockton. During her time in school, she played basketball with her sisters, KayLiegh, Cheryl and Codi. She loved being around her sisters and playing sports with them. She also joined boxing at the Boys and Girls Club. She also liked learning her Oceti Sakowia culture and language. She attended many ceremonies throughout her life, inipis-sweats, uwipis and sundances, dancing and praying for her families. She was a jingle dress dancer and, in her younger years, and attended many wacipis celebrations. She was preceded in death by her mother, Bertha Walker of Macey, Neb.; and sister, Kimimila Brown of Wolf Point. Elisabeth Nicole Garcia Wambdi Chinja Wi (Eagle Child Woman), 42, of Billings died at her home. She was the only child born to Florence McGeshick Garcia and Nicolas Garcia. She was a Southside Girl. She was an enrolled member of the Sokaogon Chippewa Community of Mole Lake, Wis., and was proud of her Native and Mexican heritage. She excelled in academics at all levels. She was brilliant, funny, kind, generous and beautiful. She helped everyone, especially the underdog. She attended Billings Senior High and received her GED. Laura Jean Caldwell, 85, of Culbertson died Oct. 21, 2022. She was born Oct. 15, 1937, in Culbertson to Bennie and Edith Antonson. Being the oldest of four, she was raised on the family farm south of Culbertson. She attended country school and later attended school in Culbertson, graduating in 1955. In 1958, she met her future husband Vernon Caldwell as he had traveled to Montana to visit his sister Vivian. As Vernon returned home to Oklahoma, she was not far behind. They were married April 17, 1959, in Steigler, Okla. They lived in Oklahoma for a short time where their son Danny was born in 1959. They then moved to Culbertson where their daughter Diane was born in 1960. In 1963, they moved to Seeley Lake, where she along with Vernon were employed at the Catholic Diocese of Helena at Legendary Lodge for boys and girls youth where she was the cook. Each day, they had to take a boat across Salmon Lake to get to work. She then went to work at a place nearby called the Clearwater Junction and cooked there for several years as well. In 1972, the opportunity came to move back to Culbertson

Ryan Cherokee Spotted Bird, “Sun Ka Wakan Hdeska” Spotted Horse, 29, of Brockton died Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2022. He was born July 28, 1993, to Adrian and Shannon in Billings. He joined brother Austin Ray to complete their family of four. The family moved to Norman, Okla., just before his first birthday, allowing him to become acquainted with his southern family. He loved fishing with his brother and dad, riding bikes around Norman, skateboarding and playing with his cousins. He attended preschool through 11th grade in Poplar. He played baseball, football, basketball, cross country and track. He graduated high school from Riverside Indian School in Anadarko, Okla., in May 2012. After graduation, he moved to New Mexico to live near his father. He attended Job Corps, worked as a security guard and enjoyed working out and running to keep himself in shape. He loved being outside and the warm climate in New Mexico suited him well. After moving back to Montana, he attended Fort Peck Community College and worked in construction. He was a shy, quiet child who was very orderly and meticulous with his toys, cars and figures all lined up perfectly. He paid close attention to details and was always building elaborate structures and crashing them down with cars to build more. He adored his brother and was often seen a his “shadow.” He and Austin competed in the Roosevelt County talent show one summer and Ryan took first place. He had special friendships that lasted through high school and beyond with Joe and Taylor Buckles. There were many sleepovers with boys camped out on the living room floor. The boys would laugh and wrestle late into the night. The trio spent time shooting hoops, hanging out, hunting and playing in youth tournaments. Madison was his very special sister and he often referred to her as his best friend. They played games online together, sent each other silly Snapchats and enjoyed spending time together. Most of all, he loved spending time with and helping his Papa Chuck. He is survived by his father, Adrian (Marjorie); mother, Shannon (Tommy); sister, Madison; brother, Austin; and grandfather, Brad. Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 7, at the Brockton Cultural Center. Burial was at the Fort Kipp Cemetery. Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel was entrusted with arrangements.

Gerald Boots Jackson Sr., “Togahe Giya” First to Fly, 72 of Poplar died Friday, Oct. 14, 2022. He was born June 24, 1950, in Poplar to George Grant “Kao” Jackson and Gertrude Louise “Tootie” Bushman Clark. On May 15, 1993, he married Shirley June Jackson they resided in Poplar. Through their union, they combined their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He served in the Army and had many careers throughout his lifetime. He was a police officer, director of fish and game, SORNA officer, housing commissioner and tribal executive board member. He enjoyed visiting and spending time with family and friends. He forever had a story and would make everyone laugh with him. He enjoyed his card family, playing many games of Contract and Poker. He is survived by his wife, Shirley June Jackson; siblings, Ron Jackson, Calvin Clark, Coleen Clark and Lanette Clark; daughter, Leigh An Jackson; sons, Gerald Jackson and Ivan Witford; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Kermit Clark, Ethel “Pie” Jackson, Judy and Cayin Rodriguez, George “Rusty” Jackson, Mitchell Clark and Roland Clark; sons, Joshua Jackson and Wade White Eagle; and daughter, Adrienne “Annie” Jackson. A four-day feed was held Monday, Oct. 17, with cremation to follow. Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel was entrusted with arrangements.

Dennis Elgen, 88, of Culbertson died Oct. 13, 2022, in his home. He was born the second of three sons to Phillip and Inger Elgen on Feb. 26, 1934. He grew up in Grey Cliff. His love of flying started around the age of 5. He achieved his pilot’s license at the age of 16 in Big Timber. After his time away in the Army, he went to aeronautics school in Tulsa, Okla, with his new bride, Olga, in 1957. They were blessed with six daughters, 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He had many talents and a love of many things. Teaching many to fly, fabricating his own tools, woodworking, baking cookies, sewing, fishing, hunting and he enjoyed photography, as well. He was known to many for his love of airplanes and flying. He served on the school board and was also active in his church. He had a strong patriotic love for his country. He is survived by his wife, Olga; daughters, Debbie Lombardo, Kathie Elgen, Karen Sather, Dixie Berwick, Lori Jasper and Linda Hinds. His celebration of life was held Monday, Oct. 17, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Culbertson. Rev. Gretchen Wagner officiated. Burial will be at a later date in Big Timber.
