Lois Longtree, 74, died Wednesday Sept. 7, 2022, in Poplar. She was born Aug. 17, 1948, to Gladys Jones Lewis and Stanley Crowe in Poplar. As the oldest, she would later welcome sister Pauline Lewis and brothers Stanley Crowe IV, Curt and David Lewis. She married Dale Longtree in the 1970s. Throughout their years together, they loved and cherished their children, Stanley Paul, Carolyn, Eugene, Stacey, Matthew, Fred Crowe-Longtree. She devoted her time to helping and visiting her many relatives across the reservation, whether it was lobbying for her relatives or a friend in need at the Fort Peck Tribal Board or another community

Juliet Smith, 96, died Sept. 4, 2022, at the Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood. She was born to Minnie (Olson) and Ole Ellevold on Nov. 24, 1925. She grew up on the family farm near Hanks, N.D., and graduated from the Hanks School. She obtained her teaching degree from Concordia College. Before her teaching career took off, she met Ed Smith at a dance at Brush Lake. They were married Sept. 29, 1945 — a marriage that would last for 70 years and produce four sons. They made their home south of Dagmar in the Volmer community. She was extremely proud of her sons and their families. Besides caring for her family, she was active in numerous community activities. She was a 4H leader, a member of the Volmer Helping Hands Club and the Cowbelles. She was a member of the Volmer Lutheran Church and taught Sunday school for many years. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and cooking. She could figure out how to prepare a variety of game — from sandhill crane to paddlefish or anything else that her men would bring home. She enjoyed fishing and took many family fishing trips to Canada and spent summer weekends at Blacktail Dam fishing and camping with neighbors. She would join Ed in Helena during the Legislature where she took up cross country skiing, which got her back to her Norwegian heritage. She and Ed took numerous trips with Ed's brother Art and wife Velma. Later, they would spend time in California each winter visiting

Marilyn “Marty” Dillon, 69, of Brockton died Sept. 6, 2022. She was born in Louisa, Ky., on July 11, 1953, to Jesse and Nancy Bowen. She spent her early years in the hills of West Virginia with her siblings Jessy and Ricky, since she was a hillbilly and was very proud of it. She moved around various places after her schooling until she ended up in Wolf Point where she met her future husband, James, through his father, Chod. They were married in 1978 in Wolf Point and then moved to Cheney, Wash., until James finished his college education. In 1980, their first son, Chaz was born and they moved to Brockton. She then began work at A& S Tribal Industries. In 1982, daughter Kari was born and, in 1987, another daughter, Caitlin, was born. She loved to cook as her delicious southern style recipes were the favorites of many in the community and she always had an open seat at her dinner table through the years. She was an avid sports fan and loved to watch her children participate for the Brockton Warriors and was die hard fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Reds. Frederick Charles Rathert, 82, died Sept. 8, 2022, at Faith Lutheran Home in Wolf Point. He was born in Wolf Point in 1940, the son of Francis and Charles Rathert. He attended St. Olaf College, where he met and married Kathy Jorgenson. After graduating, the couple moved to Missoula, and he attended the University of Montana School of Law. While in Missoula, they celebrated the birth of their first daughter, Kristin. The family moved to Williston, N.D., and he began law practice at the Bjella and Neff firm — later Bjella, Neff, Rathert, Wahl and Eiken. They had two more daughters, Karin and Gretchen, and a plethora of pets. He enjoyed hauling the family to horse shows and rodeos. He loved fishing. They spent much of their free time trolling for walleye, and he was a member of the Whopper Club. He was a passionate hunter. In his later years, he hauled his larger-than life goose decoys to the Montana ranch so he could snuggle inside the vinyl with his dog Red, and they would snooze between shooting at the gaggles of geese flying overhead. He was an active member of the community and church. He was ombudsman for Bethel Lutheran Home and volunteered for the Rural Water Association and for the Medora Foundation. He was a member of Gideons. Along with Kathy, Fred led Bible studies in prisons through the Kogudus Renewal

Vera Paulson, age 97, passed away on Aug. 23, 2022, at the Eastern Montana Veteran’s Home in Glendive, Mont. Vera, the fourth of six children born to Andrew and Johanna Christopherson, was born on May 7, 1925, in Poplar, Mont. She grew up on the family farm and attended Longview School through the eighth grade. She continued staying on the farm until her marriage to John Paulson on Dec. 11, 1960. Following their marriage, they made their home in Wolf Point, Mont. John worked for Roosevelt County Road Department and Vera worked at the Sherman Hotel restaurant as a waitress. John passed away in 1980 from cancer. Vera continued waitressing until retiring at the age of 70. Vera’s passion were her beautiful flowers in her yard. She welcomed friends, neighbors and family for a treat of ice cream or baked goodies. She enjoyed her many visits from nieces, nephews and all little ones as much as we all enjoyed her. Vera was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; siblings, Olive Murphy (Vance), Irene Vraa (Orrie), Paul Christopherson, Elsie Tolan (Victor) and Russell Christopherson (Ann); nephews, Dennis Tolan and Bruce Christopherson; and niece, Karen Lavoy. She is survived by nieces, Darlene Ellertson (Rich) of Great Falls, Mont., Lenora Stephenson (Larry) of Circle, Mont., and Elaine Moen (Phil) of Havre, Mont.; nephews, Duane Vraa (Ann) of Shelby, Mont., and Darryl Tolan (Noreen) of Glendive, Mont.; niece-in-law, Peggy Tolan of Omaha, Neb.; and numerous extended families. A graveside service will be held on Friday, Sept. 9, 2022, at 11 a.m. at the Greenwood Cemetery in Wolf Point. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www. stevensonandsons.com.
