The junior varsity lost its match against Circle in three games. The LCHS varsity did the same against the reigning state C champion team. Lustre’s junior high won against Culbertson 25-15, 25-18, and 15-10 on Tuesday evening. They end their season with a tournament at Saco on Saturday.
The Lustre JVs worked hard against a good Culbertson team to win 25-23 in the first, lost 27-26 in game 2, lost 15-10 in game 3, won 15-10 in game 4, and won the match 15-8 in the tie breaker. The LCHS varsity won all three games 25-21, 25-20, 25-20. The JV lost their match to Richey/ Lambert Thursday, Oct. 1 in some very exciting play, with both teams winning two games and going to the wire on the fifth. The JV and varsity played North Country Friday night.
Climbing Pike’s Peak is not on everyone’s agenda but it was on one of LCHS’ alumni. Sept. 19 began at 4:30 a.m. for Heidi Burns, ’94 LCHS class valedictorian, and two of her girlfriends. Pike’s peak is 14,115 feet or 4302.31 meters.
A sign at the base of the mountain warns “DO NOT CLIMB IF UNPREPARED TO HIKE BACK DOWN. Sudden changes in weather may create high winds, lightening, rain, hail, snow, freezing temperatures and ice covered rock at any time. Do not depend on services, shelter, or transportation at the summit. Be willing to turn around at any time. Your life depends on your ability to hike back down.” The path going up is single file, and more difficult after the tree-line because of the thin air. The threesome were able to complete the climb by 2:57 p.m. and take the tram down in beautiful weather.
A week later, Friday the 25th the first snow of the season made Pikes Peak a winter wonderland with as much as 4” of snow reported at the summit. Their families are real thankful they were back home by then, and back to work.
Our condolences are extended to Sam and Nancy Ortmann and Rod and Carma Bartel in the passing of their brother Gerry Reddig’s wife, Debbie. Her funeral was held at the Lustre MB Church Saturday, Oct. 3.
