Cowgirls Earn Wins Over Brockton, MonDak
The Culbertson Cowgirls used their match against the Brockton Warriors as an opportunity to give everyone playing time and experiment with different rotations.
Culbertson recorded 41 aces, led by Bella Petersen with 12. Petersen also contributed nine of the Cowgirls’ 17 assists.
Emma Berwick led the offense with six kills as Culbertson finished with 19 as a team.
Defensively, Charity Wilbanks and Kalia Featherston recorded six digs apiece, helping the Cowgirls collect 29 overall.
“It was great to get everyone in the game and try some different rotations,” Coach Tiffany Nielsen said. “Overall, the girls played well together.”
The Culbertson Cowgirls opened their regular season with a four-set victory over the MonDak Thunder in Grenora on Monday, Aug. 31.
Culbertson won the opening set 25-20 before MonDak answered with a 29-27 victory in the second. The Cowgirls quickly regained their momentum, winning the final two sets 25-18 and 25-14.
“The girls came out excited and ready to go,” Culbertson head coach Tiffany Nielsen said. “We had a lull in the second game and lost, but they bounced back in game three and came out swinging.”
Culbertson finished with 43 kills, led by Emma Berwick. Bella Petersen led the Cowgirls in both aces and assists as the team recorded 21 aces and 32 assists.
Berwick and Charity Wilbanks each contributed two of Culbertson’s seven blocks. Wilbanks led the defense with 22 digs as the Cowgirls collected 87 as a team.
Nielsen said serving was not the team’s strongest area, but the Cowgirls found success with their hitting and worked to maintain a nextpoint mentality throughout the match.
