Deadline Set For Veterans’ Stipend

A resolution was passed at the Monday, Aug. 24 meeting of the Fort Peck Tribal Executive Board approving veteran status and statutory requirements for the recently enacted veterans stipend of $500.

To qualify for the stipend, applicants must have completed 180 days active duty service or more outside initial or annual trainings or completed at least 20 years qualifying service in the U.S. National Guard or Reserves or sustained a service connected disability in the line of duty. An honorable discharge characterization is required.

All applicants must submit their DD214 forms to the Veterans Affairs Department by Sept. 25. Submissions received after the deadline will not be eligible.

The stipend took shape when the board passed a $500 donation for U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Catlin Tanner Eagleman during the July 13 meeting with little discussion about the ramifications of the move. The board then voted July 27 to approve approximately 60 tribally enrolled veterans for a one-time stipend opening up the offer to all qualified tribal members.

Local applicants can submit their DD-214 to Fort Peck Veterans Affairs at the Fort Peck Tribal Building in Poplar. Off reservation applicants can email program head Medicine Bear Lone Warrior and staff at medicinebear. lonewarrior@ fortpecktribes. net. Veterans can also call 406-768-2354 or 406-7682445 for more information.
