Culbertson Sets Participation Costs
The Culbertson School Board voted to increase sports’ activity fees during its monthly meeting for July.
The decision was made due to economic concerns.
Trustee Amber Fox made the motion to charge a participation fee of $50 per student per activity with a maximum cost of $100 per family. Lisa Steppler seconded the motion, which passed by a 3-1 margin. Trustee Verlin Steppler was the lone trustee voting against the motion.
Activities director Dave Solem provided information of what other schools charge for participation fees. Prices include $25 in Broadus, $100 in Plentywood, $55 in Fairview and $40 for each sport with a maximum of $100 in Bainville.
During last school year, Culbertson experienced a loss of $1,025.28 during the fall sports season. Expenses included $4,128.40 for items such as football helmets, wraps, scorebooks, decals, new balls and volleyball nets, and $2,221.75 for referees. The largest gate sales included $1,352 for a football game against Scobey, $1,379.10 for a football game against Poplar and $1,107 for a volleyball match against Richey/Lambert.
For basketball season, there was a profit of $1,995.29. The largest gates were $1,430 for games against Bainville, $1,185 for games against Froid/Lake and $1,168 for games against Brockton.
Other expenses totaled $9,130.32, which included cross country and track costs. Other profits amounted to $7,516.39 that included $2,245.34 for a share of the profits for the District 2C basketball tournament in Sidney.
